The
5cm leichter Granatwerfer 36

) was developed for the purpose of engaging targets outside of distances which a hand grenade could be thrown. It was standard issue for every German infantry platoon at the beginning of war.

However, by 1941 it clearly lacked the firepower and range to remain effective in a frontline role. Instead, existing models were relegated into service with auxiliary units where it remained in service until the end of the war.
