includes one Command Carbine team, one Observer Carbine team, two Gun Sections each containing two T27 4.5" launchers with crew, one Small three-hole base, one Small two-hole base & four Large bases.

During the Brittany campaign, the 12th Field Artillery Battalion of the 2nd Infantry Division was given experimental ground-mounted T27 4.5” rocket launchers instead of their normal 105mm howitzers. The battalion found them somewhat effective, but the launcher system lacked the volume of fire needed to dislodge the enemy.

Following the campaign, the battalion returned the experimental weapons along with their field report. This led to the development of the T32 Xylophone launcher system, which doubled the launchers in the battery and mounted them in the beds of 2½-ton trucks.

Rocket Launchers
Rocket launchers were one of the secret weapons of the Red Army at the start of World War Two. By the end of the war every army had their own version of these lightweight weapons capable of delivering a stunning volume of fire and saturating the target area with explosives. Each army’s Arsenal describes their rocket launchers.

More Firepower
One method delivering the large numbers required for an effective bombardment was to mount the T27 4.5" rocket launcher on the back of a 2½ ton trucks. As thr war progressed, other methods of delivering mass fire were developed including the T34 Calliope which mounted no fewer than sixty launching tube on the turret of a Sherman tank.
