Speed Flames 2012:
An 800 point Flames Of War Event
with Phil LeHunt

The Monday Knights (Melbourne Australia) hosted Speed Flames 2012; a three round, 800 point Late-war Flames Of War competition proudly supported by Zepnix War Games and Joe Dodgy Dice & Games.

Flames Of War:
Third Edition
The third edition of Flames Of War, The World War II Miniatures Game is a massive 448 page book split across three volumes.

Third Edition Forces Book
Speed Flames 2012 Players were challenged with not only by building a legal 800 point Late-war army using only the lists available in the Flames Of War Version Three Forces hand book but also playing against the clock with games having a one hour time limit. Games were played on full sized tables and scenarios used were restricted to Fair Fight and Mobile Battle scenarios (no defensive battles).

It was pleasing to see that fourteen players participated representing all armies listed in the Flames Of War Third Edition Forces handbook.
The tournament was an absolute pleasure to organise and I enjoyed watching all of the games. I particularly enjoyed the different approaches taken by players to construct an 800 point list and how different theories were put into practice on the game table to overcome army size and game time limits.

In the end, while there were a couple of time-out draws, but the majority of games ended in a result which showed the ability of players to think and act decisively.
Speed Flames 2012
Speed Flames 2012 With no defensive battles and time restriction on play, it was always going to be a challenge for infantry armies – but Flames Of War players love a challenge. Of the fourteen players who participated on the night, there were five infantry companies, two motorised/armoured infantry companies and seven tank companies.
Awards for the night were presented to:

1st Place
Edward Corsar (German Panzerkompanie).

2nd Place and Highest Placed Infantry Company
Walter Spivak (Soviet Strelkovy Batalon).

Highest Placed Non-Monday Knight
Paul Chappell (Soviet Tankovy Batalon).

Best Painted Army
Django Upton (German Gepanzerte Panzergrenadierkompanie).

Speed Flames 2012
Speed Flames 2012 The combination of smaller armies, restriction of army selection to one army book, one hour game time limit and use of Fair Fight / Mobile Battle scenarios worked very well providing an entertaining evening with a very different flavour.
