Soviet Sapper Platoon
(SU706)
The humble Soviet Sapper was a vital part of any Soviet defensive plan, their expertise in mine laying, trench planning and construction and organization of defensive obstacles are key factors in the success of any Soviet defensive plan. Their preparations were key to the defence during first few days of the battle for Kursk.
But they are often called on to take part in offensive operations where their anti-tank charges and improvised Molotov Cocktails prove dangerous weapons against unweary enemy. Their skills in removing enemy mines and obstacles are also excellent assets in any attack.
During the Battle of Kursk the Sappers directly or indirectly (though mines) destroyed or disabled 420 German tanks and assault guns. The Sappers laid 35,000 anti-tank and 4,000 anti-personnel mines before and during the battle.
In Flames of War
Sapper Platoons are available as part of your Battalion HQ or as a separate company from your Divisional support choices. As Pioneer teams they make excellent anti-tank infantry if given the opportunity to leap out on some over-committed armour.
They are also excellent for clearing mines and obstacles in the Big Push Mission. If you take their supply wagon you can also lay your own mines during any game!
